毎朝毎夕見ていた地下鉄の乗り換え案内板がありました。

それは鉄道の駅でよく見かける、アクリルやガラスの板に広告や案内を刷り込み、その裏側に蛍光灯を数本埋め込むタイプのものでした。
年季の入った案内の文字は、既成のフォントを使用せず、人の手によってレタリングされていました。正面から見た地下鉄の車両をモチーフにした、可愛らしい図案が文字に添えられていました。ガラス面に刷られたプリントのインクは細かくひび割れ、その隙間から裸の蛍光灯が覗いていました。

毎日、「今日もここにこれがある」と確認して安心しつつ、「だけどそう遠くない未来には、たぶんなくなってしまうだろう」という不安も同時に感じていました。いずれカメラを持ってきて、その姿を写真に撮っておこうと思いながら、日々が過ぎていきました。

今週、ある朝、突然にその案内板は醜悪な新しいデザインのものに変わっていました。昨日の夕方まで確かにそこにあったのに。私は呆然としました。

似たようなことが前にもありました。
その時は虫の知らせか、カメラを持って、その看板を撮るためだけに出かけました。しかし、目的の看板は店の建物ごと更地になっていました。
近所の人に聞くと、店は別の場所で仮営業しているというので訪ねてみました。もしかして馴染みのある看板を外して、保存してあるかもしれないと期待したからです。

残念ながら、看板は残っていませんでした。店の方はとても親切に対応してくれました。同じ場所に新しい店ができたら、もっと立派ないい看板ができますよ、とうれしそうにおっしゃいました。

「野毛山動物園の記憶と記録」サイトを制作しながら、他人にとってはともかく、自分にとって価値があるもの、中でも近い将来消えてしまうかも知れないものに対して、自分は一体何ができるのだろうと自問しています。

Almost every morning and evening, I walked pass a signboard.

It was a kind of a light box and seemed very old. Paints on the glass cover were partially chipping for aging, so you could see bare fluorescent lights through them. Fonts and graphics on the sign looked old-fashioned in a lovely style.

And one morning of this week, it suddenly disappeared. Actually, it was replaced by a new ugly signboard.

Every time as seeing the old signboard, I was happy to make sure that it was there. At the same time, I was afraid that it would be gone in the near future.

And the day finally came. Unfortunately, I didn't take any pictures of it, and that means there is no record of its appearance.
　
I had a similar experience with another signboard in the past.
In that case, the signboard was gone with the whole building. I visited the site to take a picture of it and found just a vacant lot there.

What can I do for them, my loved ones, which don't interest most of people and are facing extinction?
As I have been working on my new site "Remembrance and Records of Nogeyama Zoo", I often think about it.

2004年1月いっぱいで閉鎖された東横線高島町駅、そのガード下にある飲食店 *2004年1月末撮影　屋根の青とコーラの自販機と看板の赤が独特の雰囲気をかもしだしています。以前、渋谷から桜木町へ行く時に買ったパスネット。気づいたら思い出の品になっていました。
